History

Strangely the title is the clue here.
Dating back to the "100 Days Off" sessions 02-02-02 contains elements that found their way onto the
album while this track was never mastered.
Over the years 02-02-02 has been pulled out of the vaults, dusted off and fired up at Lemonworld more
than once; you might have heard it broadcast on underworldlive.com, but as Led Zep said "The Song
Remains The Same".
Why a seven year gap?

Version 1; 20 April 2001 at 23:17
In my mind I can see the room; in vivid detail. I can remember the malnourished light if you worked at
the road end of the room. I remember the "Live" Mackie mixer was propped up just by the Arp 2600.
The colour of those curtains.
The smell of those bloody curtains.
The dust particles that kicked up through the old floorboards and hung in the electric air.
Write about Romford and the through-lounge ? Me? Some other time.

Version 2; 11 June 2008 at 00.34
I was gathering audio and ideas for the quarterly radio broadcast. It wasn't going very well.
I came across the original mix of this piece and also immediately (unusually) found all of the individual
audio files..... so I fired up the parts again through our ancient Soundcraft S600 mixer (recently revived
after many many years; I love her), spent a couple of hours on the piece and we played the mix on the
show later that day.
You can listen to that particular broadcast again here.

So, to answer the question "Why a seven yesr gap?" – I don't know.

Now move on.

Lemonworld in Romford;

I used to get a buzz from the fact that we made so many of our records in a terraced house in Romford.
Well – in fact it was ‘two’ terraced houses & at one time back garden fences were pulled out between
them so you could go in one front door & out the other. Like in that Beatles film ‘Help’, only help never
came – it was all down to Rick to fight the ‘natural’ acoustics of a back bedroom or a knocked through
front room or whatever domestic space he happened to be lumped with mixing in. It all sounds so cool as
the stuff of legend but when he had to keep turning it down late at night so as not to upset the
neighbours you start to get the picture as to how maintaining a legend got to be a right norse.

A lot’ve good stuff got written & recorded in that front room though & anyone who’s followed the
webcasts from the beginning will have seen pictures of it on the webcam.
It was 10 minutes walk from Romford station but being triple-glazed & pebble-dashed blended into it’s
surroundings so that in all the years we were there not even the heavy trucks turning up outside to load
gear for a tour gave the game away
(Romford’s ‘that’ kind’ve place).
There was so much equipment in that house that it began to sag in the middle & Malcolm often remarked
that it was probably only the miles of cabling that ran between the rooms,
through the walls & beneath the floors that prevented it from collapsing.
We laid carpet in the front room ourselves. It was second hand & came from Darren’s mate Adie & you
had to keep hovering it ‘cause it got really dusty. Yeah – now it’s coming back - there was a lot’ve
Artex in that house – a theme that ran right into the front room & I guess found it’s way onto every track
that was made there.
